Frequently Asked Questions
Am I eligible for the FiT Scheme?
You are eligible for the FiT Scheme if:
-
You have a rooftop
-
You are a registered CLP or HK Electric Account Holder (not applicable to government bodies)
-
Your Renewable energy system is powered by solar and/or wind and is located on your premises with a total generation capacity of up to 1MW
-
Your Renewable energy system can be connected to the CLP/HK Electric network without any increase in capacity or network reinforcement work by CLP/HK Electric
How much can I make per month through the FiT Scheme?
The monthly income you can make through the FiT Scheme depends on the size of your Solar Energy System and the amount of sunlight within that month. You could have a monthly income of around HK$ 2000-6000+ through the FiT Scheme.
The current FiT Scheme Rates are:
(a) HK$ 5 for ≤10kW
(b) HK$ 4 for >10kW to ≤200kW
(c) HK$ 3 for >200kW to ≤1MW
How long will it take for me to break even and start making money from my solar installation?
This depends on the size of your Solar Energy System and how many kWs it can generate. However, you can expect to break even from your investment in your Solar Energy System within 3-7 years.
Once we have arranged to view the proposed site, we will provide you with a more accurate estimation in the quotation.
Are there construction limitations for Solar panel Installations?
In the case of a supporting structure (supporting structure or metal casing for the solar energy system)
-
The weight of the building service installation is more than 200kg and the height of the structure for an antenna or transceiver is not higher than 2.5m
-
The height of the structure for other building service installation is not higher than 1.5m
Please refer to Schedule 1-Part 3-Division 1 of Building (Minor Works) Regulation for details of item number 1.50.
What should I pay special attention to when considering installing solar energy systems?
You should consider:
-
The size of the roof surface, and measure whether the number of solar panels installed meets the return of the "FiT plan", it is recommended to exceed 350 sqft of roof surface;
-
Whether the voltage is enough to operate the solar system device, it is recommended to use 60A to 100A three-phase electricity.
How long does the process take from start to finish?
It should take on average around 2-3 months from signing the installation contract to installing the Solar Energy System and submitting the MW02 form to the Buildings Department. Arranging a time for the Power Company to fit the Electricity Meter depends on the Power Company’s schedule. This usually takes around 1-3 months.
Does the solar energy system require maintenance?
Solar panels generally require very little maintenance in order to function. The only thing they need is a periodic light cleaning to make sure dirt, leaves, and other debris aren't obstructing the sun's rays
